Requirements

The minimum age to participate is eighteen. There is no maximum age limit.

We do not expect trained professionals or social workers, even when in some projects certain qualifications or abilities are required. We expect individuals who are prepared to open themselves up to new experiences: meeting and working together with other people, getting to know other's backgrounds, opinions, work athmospheres, beliefs, and thoughts. Experience working together with other people as well as an interest in politics and social work are prerequisites which make the situations that occur in your project and the project country more manageable.

Background language ability is not only very helpful, but required in some countries for volunteer service (English-, French- and German-speaking countries). During the volunteer service, however, language ability is indispensable. It is important to learn the host country's language BEFORE the start of the service project, which will be organized and financially supported by ASF. Preparation for your volunteer service also includes an internship in a social service project. In addition, we recommend that you participate in a memorial site trip.

“I see my time as a volunteer as an opportunity to contribute to the understanding between Muslims and Jews and between Germans and US-Americans. As an individual this is of course difficult. But perhaps I can simply be a role-model.”

Aness Yacoubi from Wolfsburg, ASF-volunteer in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C.
