Jewish Life in the Czech Republic during the Second World War and today

Description of the project: The small Jewish cemetery, on whose grounds we are going to perform maintenance work, is situated about half an hour away from Olomouc. It is the worst maintained cemetery in Northern Moravia. Here, the war and post war period have left obvious marks. Last year, the Jewish Community began to re-erect the gravestones which have fallen. This year, the wall which once surrounded the cemetery shall be rebuilt. Therefore, the Jewish Community needs our active support.
Description of work: The participants are going to expose the bricks of the former wall, which are still covered by the ground, and remove weeds and small plants.
Of course it is not only about physical work. We also intensively want to discuss Jewish life in the Czech Republic before and during the Second World War. We want to get to know the Jewish Community and explore what being Jewish in the Czech Republic means today. In doing so, we especially want to discuss today's forms of anti-Semitism. Therefore it would be great and important, if each participant could find out beforehand about the current situation in their respective home country and thus prepare the ground for an intercultural exchange.
Accommodation: Simple lodging, probably in a school located nearby the cemetery. Each participant should bring a sleeping back, a camping mat and whatever they deem to convenient for their comfort.
