The Szloma-Albam Foundation has been promoting education, science and research as well as art and culture in a Jewish context since 1999.

The Foundation awards up to four scholarships annually to Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste volunteers.

The scholarships are primarily aimed at Jewish volunteers who biographically - regardless of their religious orientation and practice - feel connected to the Jewish world in its cultural breadth and who would like to become involved in projects that actively support a democratic, liberal and open society.

For over sixty years, Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF) (= Action Reconciliation Service for Peace / ARSP) has enabled volunteers to take a politically responsible stand for a more just and peaceful world. Currently ASF sends up to 170 volunteers for a one-year service to 11 countries in Europe, Israel and the USA.

The volunteers are involved in a wide range of projects aimed at combating discrimination against people on the basis of religion, sexual identity, skin color or language. They support socially disadvantaged people, e.g. refugees or homeless people, people with disabilities and survivors of Nazi persecution and their relatives. They work in memorials, archives and museums, in peace and human rights organizations. They actively campaign against anti-Semitism, racism and other forms of group-based hostility in the present.

Acquiring knowledge of one's own history, getting to know other narratives and perspectives, and perceiving the relevance of history for current relations are basic principles for warding off anti-democratic and anti-human attitudes. ASF volunteer groups are composed of people from diverse religious, cultural, and family backgrounds. When Jewish volunteers participate they greatly enrich the exchanges in these diverse groups.

Financing of the volunteer service

ASF volunteers receive pocket money, food allowance and free accommodation during their period of service. ASF takes out an insurance package for the volunteers (health, accident and liability insurance abroad) and covers the costs of travel to and from the project and visas. ASF accompanies the volunteers with an interesting seminar program.

ASF volunteers are asked for a solidarity contribution of 650 euros to financially contribute to the costs of the program. The Szloma Albam Foundation scholarships are aimed, among others, at people who cannot raise a solidarity contribution themselves. In this case, the Szloma Albam Foundation will cover this contribution. In addition, the scholarships enable our volunteers to understand their service as a broader social and political commitment and they promote the financial security of our program.
