Summer camp in Sarajevo
12.08.-26.08.2017

Sarajevo is sometimes known as the “Jerusalem of Europe” due to its religious and ethnic diversity. Located in the heart of the Balkans, it stands as a symbol for the many layers of European history. The international summer camp will embark on the search for traces of this complex history and support the Jewish community with caretaking work in the cemetery.

Sarajevo, like no other city in these years of commemoration of the First World War, is the focus of many conferences, debates, and events. Its history in the interwar period, its role in the former Yugoslavia, its multicultural life today, discussions about the current political situation and the social protests that are just beginning – these topics, as well as those that the international participants want to incorporate, will be the focus of the summer camp.

Participants will spend a large part of their time together doing maintenance work in the Jewish cemetery, including weeding, removing foliage, cleaning gravestones, and clearing paths. Through discussions with representatives of the community, the volunteers will learn more about the Jewish past and present in Sarajevo.

Participants can look forward to not only getting to know the capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina, but also the international Sarajevo Film Festival, which is well-known beyond the borders of the country, and will take place at the same time as the summer camp.
