Summer camp in Tuzla

Located in the heart of the Balkans, Bosnia and Hercegovina stands as a symbol for the many layers of European history. The international summer camp will embark on the search for traces of this complex history and support the Jewish community of Tuzla with caretaking work in the cemetery.

Bosnia and Hercegovina's history in the interwar period, its role in former Yugoslavia, its multicultural life today, discussions about the current political situation, different approaches to shared history and commemoration and the social protests that are taking to the streets – these topics, as well as those that the international participants want to incorporate, will be the focus of the summer camp.

Participants will spend a large part of their time together doing maintenance work in the Jewish cemetery, including weeding, removing foliage, cleaning gravestones, and clearing paths. Through discussions with representatives of the community, the volunteers will learn more about the Jewish past and present in Tuzla.

Participants can look forward to not only getting to know Bosnia's third largest city Tuzla, famous for it's salt lakes and it's unique multiethnic resistance during the Yugoslav war, but also to visiting Sarajevo, capital city of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The international Sarajevo Film Festival, which is well-known beyond the borders of the country, will take place at the same time as the summer camp.
