Summer camp in Deventer

The summer camp in Deventer is made possible through the well established cooperation of Action Reconiliation Service for Peace and the Etty Hillesum Center in Deventer. The international group will help make the inscriptions on the gravestones on a Jewish cemetery visible again through light cleaning and garden work. Welcome to a summer project where you learn a lot more than you expect!

The participants of the summer camp become acquainted with the life and diaries of Etty (Esther) Hillesum, who came to Deventer at 10 years-old with her Jewish family.  The center preserves the memory of this young woman, who refused to submit to the occupation of the Netherlands and was murdered in November 1943 in Auschwitz.  In addition, the center of education fights against exclusion and discrimination.

What do human rights and tolerance mean with respect to dissenters in the Netherlands and in the home countries of the participants?  In the workshops and excursions, the participants discuss this and their own questions about multiculturalist communities in Europe.

In addition, the participants have the opportunity to study the history of the Jewish community in Deventer, to participate in a discussion with an eyewitness, and to understand more about the culture of remembrance in the Netherlands in regard to the time of the NS and World War II through participating in workshops.

During the summer camp, excursions to Amsterdam (Anne Frank’s House and the Verzetsmuseum) and to Kamp Vught are planned.

If you wish, there is plenty to do in your free: trips along river IJssel, bike tours in the beautiful surroundings of the town, cooking together, camp fire atmosphere and participants' ideas will be part of the programme. During the time of the summer camp the famous "Deventer op stelten" - theater festival will take place!
