September 1st, 2019 - August 31st, 2020 - Apply now!

Between 1938 and 1945, a concentration camp existed in Flossenbürg, a small village near the German-Czech border in the Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz).  Approximately 100,000 people from all over Europe were deported to this camp and its 90 sub-camps. The prisoners were forced to work in local granite quarries and later worked in armament factories. At least 30,000 people died as a result of the terror.

Today, the memorial site is a European place of remembrance. The memorial site was established in 1999 and became part of the Stiftung Bayrischer Gedenkstätten (Memorial Sites Foundation of Bavaria). Prior to this, there was only a small memorial at the site. Parts of the former concentration camp area had been used as a business park and even today there are some apartment buildings located on the site.

Since 2007 and 2010 two permanent exhibitions inform about the history of the concentration camp and its aftermath in original buildings at the former parade ground. Since 2015 the education centre offers seminars and other events, supported by the museum cafè where people with special needs cater for their guests.

ASF is looking for a person who will be engaged as well in educational work as in historical research.
In the field of education you will work e.g. with school groups, in workshops or workcamps on the ground of the concentration camp memorial.

In the historical work you will for example conduct research in the archive.

In April 2020 Flossenbuerg will commemorate that Dietrich Bonhoeffer was shot 75 years ago. The protestant theologian who belonged to the resistance circle of the 20th July was executed in Flossenburg on 9th April 1945. As ASF volunteer you can take part in the commemoration events and, if interested, be involved in the preparations.

In spring 2020 the memorial Flossenbuerg commemorates the 75th anniversary of its liberation. For this event also former inmates and/or their families are expected. As an ASF volunteer you could help prepare and attend this special day.

We are looking for a person with good German language skills who is interested in historical and political education, who is able to work independently and who can see herself*himself living in a rural area and working with a stimulating team.
