The memorial site of the former concentration camp Neuengamme is located in the northern part of Germany, close to the city of Hamburg. In May 2005, the memorial site was enlarged and redesigned to include exhibitions, along with a meeting- and study-center.
There are different exhibitions about the history of the former concentration camp, a meeting centre for study groups, an archive, a library and an educational department, as well as an “Open Archive” for visitors. Neuengamme also has three former satellite camps, located in the area of Hamburg.
The concentration camp memorial runs regular film events and Sunday discussion sessions with former camp prisoners and other contemporary witnesses, as well as special exhibitions. The study center has organized seminars, presentations and meetings. The library has fixed opening-hours for visitors. The archive and the collection of pictures can be visited by arrangement. Accompaniment of groups, courses and project-days for school groups are offered by museum-service of Hamburg.
As an ASF volunteer in Hamburg-Neuengamme you support group projects with pupils and young adults. You translate texts. You help the PR department for example with a project which develops internationally new educational and digital tools for memorial places (“memoryscapes”). You correspond with former prisoners and accompany them when they visit the memorial site.
This placement is combined with visiting services for seniors in Hamburg (Solidarity for the Elderly).
